Biography
In November 1946, Abryutin was working as an NKVD interpreter when he escaped from the Soviet Zone of Germany to the American Zone. He was born in 1923 in the village of Nadkopanye near Lake Ladoga in Northwestern Russia. He moved to the village of Yasski, Pskov Oblast, before the war, and was working as a clerk in the Yasski regional administration when the Germans occupied the area in late 1941. He spoke Russian, German, and English, which probably prompted the Germans to send him to the propaganda office in nearby Dedovichi in the spring of 1942. He completed propaganda courses in the ROA school in Dabendorf, Germany, in February 1943, and returned to Dedovichi to conduct operations until spring 1944. He then transferred to Germany, probably to join the KONR, and was there when Soviet forces entered in 1945.
In December 1945 Abryutin was hired as a German interpreter for the NKVD operational group in Weimar, Germany, under the Soviet Military Administration. He escaped in November 1946 and by 1952 he was living in Fürth, Germany, near Nuremberg, where he was reportedly in contact with an agent of the U.S. Army CIC. In 1952 he emigrated to the United States, where, according to the 1969 KGB Wanted List, he settled in the state of Oklahoma. The KGB had no further information about his whereabouts after his emigration to the United States.[i]
