Chernenko joined the NKVD in September 1940.[i] After the war started, he was the chief of the OO NKVD office in the Kanevskiy District of the Krasnodar Kray until German forces arrived in southern Russia in 1942. The date and circumstances of his capture are not available; however, he was listed as an investigator in Abwehr Group 301,[ii] a German counterintelligence unit that operated in Crimea, the North Caucasus, and Latvia.[iii] He used the pseudonym Lyuts (Lüz).
