Biography
Dmitriy Borisovich Dorofeyev was born in 1907 in the Dolzhanskiy district of Orel Oblast. He was recruited into the NKVD possibly in the late 1920s or early 1930s, and by 1935 he was working as an investigative officer of the NKVD regional office in the town of Livny, Orel Oblast. In 1938, the Orel NKVD office arrested him for an unspecified reason, and he was sentenced to three years in prison, which he served in Karelia. He was released in 1941 and conscripted into the Soviet Army.
Dorofeev was captured on the battlefield in Karelia and held in a German officer’s POW camp in Finland. In June 1942, he was recruited and sent to a German intelligence school in Estonia, where he worked as a document forger until February 1945. He also taught lectures on NKVD methods of operation and was involved in source recruitment operations and penetrations behind Soviet lines in the Leningrad Oblast. He reportedly held an NCO rank in the German army.[i]
