Biography

Ryabenko was born in 1926 in the Nikolayev Oblast of Ukraine, and he lived in Donetsk as a child before the war. In 1942, he was among millions of Soviet citizens transported as forced laborers to Germany. U.S. forces liberated him from a German camp in July 1945 and repatriated him to Soviet control, where he was initially employed dismantling German factories. He was hired in October 1945 as an interpreter and worked for the MGB operational group in Calau, Germany, until April 1948, when he fled to the U.S. sector of Berlin.[i]
