Biography
Stankaitis was born in 1916 in Jurbarkas Region, Lithuania. He served in the German occupation police in his hometown from 1941-1943. In 1944, he joined the army of Povilas Plechavičius, a Lithuanian general who supported Germany during World War II, and then in a German construction battalion. He was captured by French forces in Germany and transferred to the Soviet command. He escaped while being transferred and settled in East Germany using the name August Kizel.
He lived in West Berlin as of 1953. In August 1954, Soviet intelligence recruited him and sent him to the USSR, and in November dispatched him back to West Berlin as an illegal. When he arrived, he refused to fulfill his assignment and turned himself over to adversary intelligence. Nothing further is known of his whereabouts.[i]
