Biography
Fomenko was born in 1921 in Voroshilovgrad (now Lugansk) Oblast, Ukraine. He was a Komsomol member and worked in a mine before the war.
In 1942, he was left behind Germany lines as a stay-behind intelligence operative and radioman in Krasniy Luch in eastern Ukraine. In October 1942 he was arrested and recruited by German counterintelligence, initially as an agent, and later as a full officer. The KGB accused him of compromising other intelligence personnel who had been left behind German lines and of actively supporting anti-partisan operations in eastern Ukraine. In June 1944, he was a machine gun section leader in the “Russian Protective Corps” in Serbia, which the Germans had created to fight Yugoslavian partisans. His last known whereabouts were near the Yugoslavian-Austrian border on 9 May 1945.[i]
