Khelge Eynarovich Vainio

Хельге Эйнарович Вайнио

Biography

Vainio was born in 1922 in Finland, and he lived in Karelia prior to the war. He was drafted into the Soviet Army in 1941. In August 1942, the Leningrad Front Intelligence Department dispatched him with a group of Soviet intelligence personnel into Finnish-held territory, where he surrendered to Finnish forces. He compromised members of his team, who were subsequently arrested and executed.

At the end of 1942, Vainio was recruited into Finnish intelligence with the code name “Uuno” and trained in a Finnish training center until March 1943. He then worked for Finnish intelligence, which dispatched him into Soviet-held territory on intelligence missions. After the ceasefire in 1944, he assisted in organizing secret weapons caches on Finnish territory. In 1945, he was living in Helsinki with his uncle, and in 1948 he may have moved to Sweden. [i]
