Karapet Arutyunovich Anakyan

Карапет Арутюнович Анакян

Biography

Karapet Arutyunovich Anakyan was born in 1905 in Istanbul, Turkey. He was ethnically Armenian and emigrated from Turkey to Greece in the early twentieth century. He subsequently emigrated from Greece to the Armenian SSR in 1947 and lived in Kirovakan (now Vanadzor) until 1953. In July 1953, the Transcaucasus Military District dispatched him to Turkey on a clandestine mission, likely as a GRU illegal sent to infiltrate Turkey. He did not succeed in fulfilling his mission, however, because he was arrested and interrogated, and he provided Turkish authorities information about Soviet intelligence and his mission specifically. He may have still been living in Turkey in 1969 when the KGB Wanted List was published;[i] he was not listed in the 1979 KGB Wanted List. No further information is available about Anakyan.
